What is a Float Cum Boost Battery Charger?

A Float Cum Boost Battery Charger is an industrial DC power supply that continuously feeds a connected load and maintains a standby battery bank in a single, integrated panel. It is the standard solution wherever a load is too critical to tolerate even a momentary power break. Two charging modes are managed automatically:

  • Float mode — the normal running state. The charger supplies the DC load and trickle-charges the battery to keep it at full capacity, compensating for self-discharge.
  • Boost mode — a higher-voltage state used to recharge a depleted battery quickly after a discharge event, before reverting to float. Because the battery is permanently connected across the DC bus, the transition from charger-fed to battery-fed power on a mains failure is seamless and instantaneous — there is no transfer switch and no break in supply. This is what makes the FCBC the preferred choice over a stand-alone charger for protection-grade and safety-grade applications.

How the EnerTech FCBC Works

Grid healthy

The charger powers the DC load and floats the battery in parallel. Output is clean, regulated DC with low ripple.

Grid fails

The battery instantly carries the full load with no interruption. No changeover delay, no voltage dip.

Grid restored

The microcontroller selects boost mode, recharges the battery at the optimum rate, then automatically returns to float.

Power Quality Conditioning

The microcontroller selects boost mode, recharges the battery at the optimum rate, then automatically returns to float.

Key Features

why choose 1
Zero-break DC supply

The battery is always in circuit, so a mains failure causes no interruption to the load. Ideal for protection, control and signalling circuits.

price 1 3
Fully automatic float/boost management

A high-end microcontroller selects modes, starts and stops charging, and prevents both deep discharge and overcharge — extending battery life and removing manual intervention.

why choose 3
Built-in redundancy options

From a single charger to fully duplicated dual-FCBC systems with automatic change-over and alarm, so availability scales to your criticality.

why choose 3
Fast, low-downtime maintenance

Pluggable PCBs, on-board test points and a comprehensive O&M manual with troubleshooting charts make servicing quick and predictable.

why choose 1
Low ripple, clean DC

Full-wave fully-controlled rectification plus a dedicated P&I controller deliver stable, low-ripple output that protects sensitive electronics and instrumentation.

price 1 3
Robust protection suite

Overcurrent, overvoltage, short-circuit, phase-failure and phase-sequence-reversal protection guard both the charger and the connected battery bank.

price 1 3
Engineered for harsh sites

Industrial enclosures up to IP65, transformer isolation and temperature-controlled cooling keep the system thermally stable in demanding environments.

Configurations We Manufacture

EnerTech builds the FCBC in multiple topologies so the redundancy level matches the criticality of your application:

Configuration Description Best for
Single FCBC One rectifier handles both float and boost duty. Standard standby DC loads.
Configuration Description Best for
Float + Boost (Dual Rectifier) Separate float and boost rectifiers. Loads needing fast recharge while staying powered.
Dual FCBC (100% Redundant) Two full chargers with automatic standby change-over. High-availability / no single point of failure.
Dual FCBC (Parallel Operation) Both chargers share load for higher capacity. High-current DC buses.
2 FCBC + 2 Battery Banks, single load bus Fully duplicated source feeding one bus. Mission-critical utility & power-plant DC systems.
In a redundant build, if the duty charger fails, the standby unit takes over automatically with an audible and visual alarm, while the load and battery continue to be supported without interruption.
Feature Specification
Regulation Full-wave fully-controlled rectifier for low inherent ripple; separate analogue P&I controller for transient response
Isolation Transformer-based for complete galvanic isolation

Frequently Asked Questions

An FCBC is an industrial DC charger that simultaneously powers a critical load and keeps a standby battery fully charged. In normal operation it "floats" the battery; after a discharge it "boosts" the battery back to full charge — all automatically — providing uninterrupted DC power.

Float charging maintains a fully-charged battery at a steady low voltage to offset self-discharge during normal running. Boost charging applies a higher voltage to recharge a depleted battery quickly after a power outage, before the charger reverts to float mode.

Yes. Because the battery is permanently connected across the DC bus, the load is fed by the battery the instant mains fails — with zero changeover time and no voltage interruption.

EnerTech manufactures FCBC systems from 24V to 360V DC, with output current up to 800A, in single-phase (230V) and three-phase (415V) input versions. Ratings are customisable to your project.

The charger supports Lithium-Ion, Lead-Acid, VRLA and Ni-Cd battery banks, with charging parameters configured to the battery type.

Yes. EnerTech offers 100% redundant dual-FCBC systems with automatic change-over and alarm, as well as parallel-operation and dual-battery-bank configurations for the highest availability requirements.

A microcontroller automatically manages float/boost selection and charge start/stop, preventing both deep discharge and overcharging — the two main causes of premature battery failure. Built-in overcurrent, overvoltage and short-circuit protection safeguard the system.

They are deployed in power stations, substations, steel and cement plants, petrochemical and oil & gas facilities, telecom and railway signalling, hospitals, data centres and any application needing reliable, uninterrupted DC power.
